Grass! You might be wondering what’s up with our logo. And you wouldn’t be the first. After all, as a general rule, people don’t eat grass, and our mantra here at LocalFoody is “Helping People Find Good Food”. So, what gives?

Well, to quote Michael Pollan “All Flesh is Grass”. This is the title of Chapter 8 in The Omnivore’s Dilemma, the book that drove me to create LocalFoody, and the sense of it touched me profoundly.

Grass is at the foundation of a sustainable food system, one that is in harmony with nature, and balances inputs and outputs for the good of humans and other animals alike. From the pastures we domesticated animals on, to the corns, greens and other grass variants that sustain us, grass has long been at the core of our food system.

In Pollan’s words:
Our species’ coevolutionary alliance with the grasses has deep roots and has probably done more to ensure our success as a species than any other with the possible exception of the trillion or so bacteria that inhabit the human gut.”

For 18 years I avoided beef. This spring I spent a week on a working Argentinian cattle ranch. My hosts slaughtered a yearling – but I ‘forgot’ to tell them I didn’t eat beef. So not to offend, I decided to indulge and to my surprise I enjoyed the meat. It was unlike anything I’d ever eaten before. Why? That Aberdeen-Angus yearling had only ever eaten the pampas from within the ranch.

Ever since, I’ve been searching for the elusive Canadian beef with the same taste and texture. I haven’t found it yet, but am convinced that locally raised, grass fed meat can not be beaten!

    Besides it’s pretty 🙂

I’ve never managed to be a full time vegetarian but have slowly but surely lowered my meat intake. I still can’t get over how much we used to and how much meat people still eat. Now, however, I’ve almost become a vegetarian by default. I try not to eat meat (or dairy, eggs, etc.) that’s not sustainably and organically grown. It’s not a hard thing to do fortunately as I can hit a few good farmers markets and butchers in my area and the meat in the grocery store doesn’t even tempt me. I think finally watching Food Inc. also helped with that final change! More people need to see that movie!

Great site! I’ll be visiting often! I’ve been thinking someone should create a site like this for some time now 🙂 Glad you did!
